LATEST NEWS
Following the success of the year 5/6 competition last week, this week saw year 3/4 children get their chance to compete in tag rugby events.
On Wednesday 11th October, 17 schools descended on Ashby RFC to take part in the event. Including;
Ashby Hill Top
Ashby Willesley
Ashby C of E
Woodcote
Thringstone
Griffydam
Albert Village
Sir John Moore
Viscount Beaumont
Measham
Packington
Blackfordby
St Charles
Mixed boys and girls teams consisting of 8 players, played in groups of 4 or 5 teams with the top 2 teams from each group advancing to the quarter final stage. The group stage featured 28 matches in total across 4 pitches and were excellently officiated by a combination of young leaders from Ashby School and teachers running the side line.
The quarterfinal line-up featured some interesting clashes. With Willesley A playing Willesley B, Griffydam playing Thringstone, Woodcote A playing Packington and Viscount Beaumont playing Ashby Hill Top.
The action only intensified in the Semi-finals when both games were won by a single point.
Ashby Hill top 4 – Woodcote A 5
Willesley A 5 – Griffydam 6
Resulting in a North West Leicestershire first meeting for semi-finalist Griffydam and Woodcote.
The final as the semi-finals before it, came down to the wire with only 1 point in the game for the winning side. With Griffydam progressing to the next stage. With a score line of 5 – 4.
A massive thank you to Ashby RFC for allowing us to use their facilities for this event, Ashby School for providing fantastic officials for the event. Without their support, we would struggle to hold a 17 team tag rugby event.
On Thursday 12th October, 13 schools descended on Broom Leys Primary School to take part in the event.
With matches taking place across 3 pitches there was plenty of action with teams demonstrating determination and passion in some hotly contested matches. There were a number of teams that didn’t have much experience at the start of the day but everyone showed significant improvement throughout the day.
In pool 1 there were 79 tries in just 10 matches with teams from Broom Leys, Dovebank, Ellistown, New Swannington and Warren Hills competing in a number of high scoring matches. Broom Leys eventually came out on top with 4 wins from 4 matches.
Whitwick St John A were the dominant team in Pool 2, finishing top without conceding a try from their matches against All Saints, Hugglescote, and Woodstone.
Pool 3 saw Newbold C of E, St Clares, Swannington and Whitwick St John B battle it out and after a series of big wins Newbold topped the group.
The group winners were joined in the quarter finals by the 3 runners up – Ellistown, Woodstone and Whitwick St John B as well as the 2 best 3rd placed teams – New Swannington and St Clares. Special mention should also go to Hugglescote who narrowly missed out on a quarter final spot.
The highlight of the quarter finals was an end to end game between Newbold and Woodstone which was eventually won 6-5 by Woodstone. Team A beat Team B in the ‘Whitwick St John Quarter final’ to also make the semi-final line up where they were joined by Broom Leys and Ellistown.
In the semi-finals Broom Leys faced Whitwick St John A. The match was level at 1-1 at half time and after another tight half, Broom Leys edged the match 4-3. Woodstone beat Ellistown 7-4 to also book their place in the final.
As the day drew to a close, spectators gathered to watch Broom Leys take on Woodstone in the final. The hosts continued their free-flowing performances, scoring 6 tries in the final to win 6-3 and secure the title. The achievement of runners up, Woodstone, was particularly impressive given that their team was made up of entirely year 3 pupils. They will almost certainly be back next year, looking to go one better.
Throughout the day, there were plenty of demonstrations of the spirit of the games with every match finishing with handshakes and 3 cheers for the opposition. New Swannington were rewarded with the Spirit of the Games award after showing strong teamwork and demonstrations of honesty from players and spectators.
The event was only possible thanks to Broom Leys School who stepped in to host the event after a waterlogged pitch resulted in having to move the competition. Young Leaders from King Edward VII College also supported the day, acting as touch judges and scorers throughout the day. The pupils, teachers and parents from all the schools contributed to a really positive atmosphere through the day so a big thank you to everyone involved!
