This time of year can be extremely stressful for pupils taking their exams, whether that be GCSE’s, A Levels or even Mock Exams. Here are some tips from NWLSSP on how to reduce exam stress.
- Time Management
Before you start revising it can be helpful to plan when you are going to do your exam revision and when you are going to have breaks, along with any hobbies you do out of school

- Know how you learn
Everyone learns in different way. Some learn better by creating mind maps and making colourful posters, some learn better by writing out lots information. There is no right or wrong way, but you will be more productive with your revision if you understand how you work best.
- Have productive breaks
It is so important to have breaks from your revision, whether that be taking a short walk outside, playing sport or meeting up with friends for a coffee. Your brain needs to rest and recuperate and you will find having breaks will make you more productive when you come back to revise.
However, try not to stare at your phone or computer during your break as this will probably make you more tired.
- Be organised
When you sit down to revise try to make sure you are prepared and know what you have planned for the next hour or so. Ensure you have all the stationery and equipment you will need at hand and a drink to keep hydrated.
- Sleep
Similarly, to having enough breaks, sleeping is incredibly beneficial in improving productivity and outlook on situations. Your brain needs to rest and recuperate before your next revision session.

- Work with peers/communicate
It can be useful to get together with your peers from your class and revise together. You could give each other different topics and then test each other on them.
It is also important to talk to people if you are worried or concerned about something, whether that be with your parents, teacher or friends. It is better to talk things through with someone rather than suffer on your own. As the saying goes, a problem shared is a problem halved.
- Set yourself realistic targets
When you sit down to revise, give yourself a goal that you feel you can achieve in the time you have allocated yourself. This could be as simple as learning 10 points about a certain topic or completing a past paper. This way you will feel you have been productive and positive about accomplishing the targets you set yourself.
- Eat well
Always give yourself time to eat well throughout the day. To be able to revise well, you need to have the energy to do so and it is through eating well that you will gain this energy.
- Stay off social media
Social media is such a huge distraction that you will achieve less if you constantly have access to it. During your planned revision sessions, move your phone to somewhere that you cannot see it, or give it to your parents to hide so you cannot be tempted by it. Once your revision session has finished then you can check for notifications before having a good break.
- Keep things in perspective
At the end of the day, it is important to try your best in everything you do, however it is equally important to remember that is all you can do. You should be proud of whatever results you achieve. Throughout life you will always be faced with disappointments, whether that be exam grades, job applications or sports results. Do not waste time panicking and being stressed, live life to the fullest and enjoy all opportunities that are open to you.
