300 Children, from 20 schools, ran, jumped, threw and smiled their way through this year’s sports hall athletics competitions which took place on 7th, 8th and 14th November 2017 at Castle Rock High School.
On the first evening, students from Albert Village were able to record winning performances in 6 events, including the boys and girls 4 x 1 lap relays where they recorded the quickest times of any of the 3 nights. Broom Leys performed consistently well across all of the events that night and were able to finish as the team with the highest points total on the day. There were also impressive performances from Griffydam, Ashby Hill Top, Dovebank and Warren Hills during the evening.
Ashby Willesley were the top performing team of the second day of competition as their students recorded the best overall score in 6 different events including both the boys and girls over/under relay race. There was however plenty of other successes throughout the evening with children from Thringstone, Moira, Viscount Beaumont, Newbold, Swannington, New Swannington and Ashby C of E, all performing well. Thringstone also received the Spirit of the Games Award for the overall event due to their attitude and behaviour throughout the competition – the children were respectful and determined all evening, always with a smile on their faces!
There was plenty more action on the third day as students from Belvoirdale, All Saints, Measham, Heather, Holy Cross, St Clare’s and Woodcote all took part. Woodcote finished as the top team on the day after top scoring in 3 events, all of which featuring their girls – 2 x 1 lap relay, chest push and javelin.
In the final standings, Ashby Willesley were the winning team who will now progress to represent North West Leicestershire in the Level 3 competition. They narrowly beat Woodcote by 9 points to claim the title. Broom Leys finished in third place.
The event was only possible thanks to a variety of people who made it happen. Castle Rock hosted the event and provided impressive facilities and equipment. Young Leaders from King Edward’s and Ashby provided fantastic support throughout the events – setting up equipment and measuring and recording events.
