On 2nd April 2019, 29 primary schools and 2 secondary schools descended upon Donisthorpe Woodlands to take part in the annual North West Leicestershire School Sports Partnership Orienteering event. An event that has moved from strength to strength since it first started over 5 years ago due to the unique experience that it offers schools, teachers and most importantly the children involved. The event which is ran in a joint effort by NWLSSP and Leicestershire Orienteering Club, involves pairs of children navigating their way to different way points in the woodlands with only a map and a stop watch to guide them.
Pairs scored 10 for each station they successful found and recorded using their state of the art electronic dibber system which records the stations found and compares that to the length of time it took. Pairs had 30mins to find as many stations on the map as they could before returning to the finish line, pairs would lose 5 points for every minute over the 30min deadline.
Despite the traditional awful weather 730 children braved the elements on the day which again is a massive jump from 620 last year and 480 in 2017. This shows the enthusiasm that NWLSSP schools and children have for the sport and hopefully this event will continue to grow in the future. Just like last year this is the BIGGEST SCHOOLS ORIENTERRING EVENT IN THE COUNTRY and just wouldn’t be possible without the teachers involvement, core SSP staff, young leaders, the Donisthorpe Woodlands Centre and of course the Orienteering club that bring not only there fantastic equipment but also their years of experience and expertise.
