LATEST NEWS
There’s been 88 Kwik Cricket matches across NWL this week which totalled over 55 hours of play!
There was a girls event on Monday (21st May) followed by mixed events on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
On Monday, girls from Ashby C of E, Broom Leys, Holy Cross, Hugglescote, Sir John Moore, Swannington, Sir John Moore, Thringstone, Viscount Beaumont, Willesley and Woodcote all took part in an entertaining event at Broom Leys Cricket Club. When the competition reached the semi-final stage Willesley A faced Holy Cross after they beat Ashby C of E and Hugglescote in their respective quarter-finals. The second match saw Broom Leys, who beat Viscount Beaumont in the QF, take on Whitwick St John, who overcame Willesley B. The final saw Broom Leys score 239 runs but Willesley A scored 299 runs to take the victory. They will now go on to represent the area in the Level 3 competition. Broom Leys still had something to celebrate though as their girls were awarded the Spirit of the Games award for the respect and passion they showed throughout the afternoon.
Broom Leys CC was also the host for the first mixed competition which took place on Tuesday. Teams competed across 2 pools of 4 with all 8 teams then progressing to the quarter-finals. Holy Cross beat Heather B in the first of the quarter-finals, before Hugglescote A beat Heather A to also progress. The match between Broom Leys and Thringstone was the closest of the round but it was Broom Leys who edged it 263 runs to 252. The finals QF saw Whitwick St John beat Hugglescote B to complete the semi-final line-up. The opening semi-final was a thriller with both Holy Cross and Whitwick St John finishing on 257 runs. The match was decided based on the number of wickets taken and it was Holy Cross who progressed to the final. They were joined by Hugglescote A who beat Broom Leys in their semi-final. In the final Holy Cross batted first and scored 221 runs before Hugglescote A scored 290 to claim the victory. Heather won the Spirit of the Games for their teamwork and determination.
On Wednesday, attention turned to Ibstock Cricket Club where 7 more teams battled it out in a round robin competition. 2 teams from Donisthorpe were joined by Ibstock Junior, Moira, Woodstone, Measham C of E and St Clares for another enjoyable afternoon in the sunshine. The competition was really competitive with St Clares and Ibstock Junior both winning 4 matches but that was only enough to see them finish in 3rd and 4th respectively. Measham C of E recorded 5 wins from 6 games and had an overall run difference of +98 runs but again that wasn’t quite enough for the win – they did however win the Spirit of the Games Award for their self-belief and passion across the afternoon. Donisthorpe A finished with 5 wins but their run difference of +233 runs saw them top the league and progress to the NWL final.
The final event of the week took place at Ashby Hastings Cricket Club with children from 7 schools competing for the last place in the area final. In pool 1, Woodcote came up against some tough competition as Ashby Hill Top, Albert Village and Packington all finished with 2 wins and 8 points. Of the 3, Albert Village had the best run difference, -15, to finish as runners-up and progress to the semi-finals. Ashby Willesley A were in dominant form as they recorded 4 wins and finished with a massive run difference of +320. In group 2, Ashby C of E were also undefeated and topped the group with Snarestone also progressing to the semi-final ahead of Willesley B, All Saints and New Swannington. The 2 group winners continued their unbeaten form in the semi-final and met in the final. Ashby C of E batted first and scored 243 runs but Willesley A secured the victory with a huge score of 350 runs. Their children also won the Spirit of the Games Award for the respect they showed to officials and their opponents throughout the day.
In the final Willesley and Hugglescote both beat Donisthorpe to set up a final deciding match. Hugglescote batted first scoring 292 runs and then took 6 wickets to help limit Willesley to 264 runs and secure the victory.
The events would not have been possible without the support of Broom Leys, Ibstock and Ashby Hastings Cricket Clubs who provided us with the venues for the events. We are also extremely grateful to the young leaders from Newbridge and Ibstock High Schools who officiated all of the matches.
