Coalville Gymnastics Club played host to 3 fantastic afternoons of gymnastics as the Key Steps 1, 2 & 3 competitions finished a busy half-term of events. It was a superb week for Hugglescote as they took gold medals in all three team competitions and seven medals in the individual competitions.
In each competition, teams rotated around 6 stations including a warm-up, practice areas and then judging areas for floor and bench/vault. For the judged performances, children had to learn set routines and skills and perform them with maximum precision, style and technique. Scores were awarded for each individual child (with a maximum score of 20.0) which were then used to calculate overall team scores (with a maximum score of 60.0) as well as the individual winners.
Overall almost 300 children took part across the week as 77 teams participated from 19 schools.
On Tuesday, 28 of those teams battled it out in the Key Steps 3 competition for years 5 and 6. Hugglescote were the outstanding performers of the day with a score of 57.60 with Ellistown also performing well to take second spot with a score of 56.30. Below that the top 10 was extremely close with only 1.70 points separating places 3-10 but it was Worthington A who claimed third place with a score of 55.30, ahead of Ashby C of E A by just 0.10.
In the individual competition, three gymnasts from Hugglescote made the podium with both of the runners-up (19.3) and one of the 3rd placed gymnasts coming from the school. The top performer at Ellistown also finished in joint 3rd place (19.0) but it was a gymnast from Ashby C of E who took the top prize with a score of 19.40.
As well as the individual prize, Ashby C of E had something else to celebrate as they were awarded the Spirit of the Games Award.
Wednesday night saw year 3 and 4 children take part in the Key Steps 2 competition with Hugglescote once again showing their gymnastics strength, taking top spot with 57.4. Willesley A finished as the runners-up (56.9) ahead of Whitwick St John A (55.7). Measham St Charles took away the Spirit of the Games Award thanks to the teamwork and determination they showed throughout the competition.
In the individual competition, just 0.3 points separated the top 5 gymnasts as 4 different schools were represented on the podium. Hugglescote had gymnasts finishing third (19.4) and joint second (19.3). The other runner-up was from Whitwick St John (19.3) who finished behind joint winners from Willesley and Albert Village who both scored 19.4.
In the Key Steps 1 competition on Thursday, Hugglescote made it three wins from three as they set an impressive score of 55.8 which could not be beaten. They were however pushed hard by Broom Leys (54.9) who finished in second and Newton Burgoland (53.8) who finished third. Sir John Moore claimed the Spirit of the Games Award for the respect and determination they showed.
Gymnasts from Broom Leys and Willesley shared third place in the individual competition with scores of 18.5 but it was children from Hugglescote who occupied the top two spots to take silver (18.7) and gold (18.9) to wrap up a great week for their school.
Thanks to everyone who took part in the competitions and who came along to support – there was a great atmosphere throughout the week.
Also a huge thank you to Coalville Gymnastics Club who not only hosted the event but also provided judges, leaders and general volunteers to ensure the smooth running of the events – they wouldn’t have been possible without them all.
