Yesterday 60 pupils from Ashby School, Castle Rock High School, Ivanhoe College, Ibstock Community College, King Edward VII Science & Sports College and Newbridge High School had the opportunity to go on the Higher Attaining Pupils day held at Loughborough University. The aim of this programme is to show those students who excel in PE or who have a strong interest in sport a high quality sporting Higher Education environment to help them consider future career opportunities and pathways in the sector.
It was an insightful and inspirational day for all pupils involved, being able to spend time in one of the UK’s leading higher educational institutions, which is world renowned for its sporting excellence. The day involved an introduction to Loughborough University and university life which preceded a tour around the amazing sports facilities the campus has to offer. During the tour there was even an opportunity to watch some of GB Heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompsons training session on the Indoor Athletics Track! After lunch pupils got to hear about ‘The day in the life an Elite Athlete’ from Triathlete Frankie Hall, where she discussed the ups and downs of being an Athlete and the opportunities and flexibility Loughborough offers to Athletes. The following workshop was a Sports Science overview, which discussed the different components of Sports Science and how these elements might relate in a practical environment when working with athletes. The day was rounded off with a practical session in Volleyball and Handball, which the pupils enjoyed participating in.
We hope all pupils involved came away with a great insight into Higher Education and the opportunities available to them. Thank you to Loughborough Sport for hosting our pupils.
