Tony Moore Shield – Kirby Shield

Primary League Finals Day

Two of our primary football league finals took place yesterday and it was a Whitwick St John vs Willesley showdown in both! Find out more about each final below.

Tony Moore Shield

Our Year 5/6 Girls’ Tony Moore Shield final took place yesterday at Coalville Town F.C between Whitwick St John and Willesley. The competition is in its second year of running & is named after Tony Moore who was a well respected coach and active member of Coalville Town F.C who was hugely instrumental in developing the girls’ and women’s pathway in football locally. Tony also spent his time volunteering in schools to engage girls within football during extra-curricular time, enabling even more girls across the area to discover a passion for football.
The league started off with 16 teams in it, and came down to Hugglescote vs Willesley in semi-final one and Whitwick St John vs Broom Leys in semi-final two. Whitwick managed to find the back of the net against Broom Leys to secure a 1-0 victory into the final whilst Willesley battled out against the winners of our September competition, Hugglescote, and came out victorious with a 3-1 win.
On finals day both teams turned up to the new 3G pitch at Coalville Town F.C excited and raring to go in the sunshine. The stage was set for a fantastic final as neither Whitwick nor Willesley had dropped a point in the group stage or lost a game in the knock-outs! The game got underway and Willesley got off to a flying start putting away 3 goals in the first half but by no means were Whitwick St John down and out. Whitwick started strong after half time and defended exceptionally well against Willesley, preventing them from scoring again, however Willesley also weren’t letting Whitwick break them down easily and so when the final whistle blew it was Willesley who took home the trophy with a 3-0 victory! The girls from both sides continued to put on impressive displays of football, tactics & teamwork throughout the entire game and played with respect and honesty.
We were also lucky enough to have a special visit from Filbert Fox from Leicester City F.C to come and join in the post-match celebrations!

Kirby Shield

Our Year 5/6 Mixed Kirby Shield final also took place yesterday afternoon at Coalville Town F.C between Whitwick St John & Willesley. The Kirby Shield has been running for over 50 years and was founded by Michael Kirby, a former pupil & teacher of King Edward VII school (now Castle Rock) and has united schools across the area in competitive football opportunities for their pupils. In recent years the SSP has created the Kirby Plate (Div 2) to run alongside the Kirby Shield (Div 1) to enable all schools to enter an appropriate level of competition for their pupils.
The Kirby Shield this year saw 10 teams enter and after playing off against each other in two group stages the four semi-finalists were New Swannington, Whitwick St John, Willesley & Ibstock Juniors. Whitwick St John took on New Swannington and in a close and competitive game came away with a 2-1 win to seal their spot in the final. Willesley played off against Ibstock Juniors and after another very close semi-final went on to join Whitwick in the final with a 1-0 win over Ibstock Juniors. Neither Whitwick St John nor Willesley had dropped a point in the group stage or lost a game so the final was set to be a highly competitive game!
On the day the teams were greeted at Coalville Town F.C by a special visit from Filbert Fox from Leicester City who even joined in the Willesley team warm up! With supporters filling inand the sun shining the final got underway, and it wasn’t long until Whitwick St John hit the back of the Willesley net from a very nicely taken free kick. Whitwick continued to apply the pressure and maintain possession to get shots off towards the Willesley goal, however the Willesley keeper and defence did everything to prevent another ball from crossing their goal line. After half time the scoreline remained 1-0 to Whitwick but with only 3 minutes left on the clock Willesley broke the Whitwick defence and got themselves onto the scoresheet! Frantic football ensued from both sides desperate to find a last minute winner and with only 20 seconds until the final whistle Willesley hit one home to secure their victory! Both sides played with passion and determination, never game up and played right till the final whistle.
 Thank you once again to Wayne & Coalville Town F.C for hosting us at their fantastic venue and supporting with the finals, to all the schools who took part in both leagues and thank you also to Leicester City in the Community for getting Filbert Fox to attend!
