Last week we had 18 teams from 13 schools take part in our Year 5/6 tag rugby competition at Coalville RFC. Tag Rugby is sponsored by Principle Wills and Principle Financial Services.
The tournament is made up on teams of mixed boy’s and girl’s teams consisting of minimum of 8 players, played in 4 pools with the top 2 teams from each group advancing to the quarter final stage.
On Thursday 3rd October 13 schools with 18 teams ascended on Coalville RFC to take part in the tag event.
Schools involved; Thringstone, Belvoirdale, Woodstone, Whitwick St John, New Swannington, Warren Hills, Broom Leys, Ellistown, All Saints, Blackfordby, Viscount Beaumonts, St Charles.
The pool stages featured 32 matches across 4 pitches and were excellently officiated by young leaders from Castle Rock.
The quarterfinal line-up featured some tight games with one game officially finishing on a draw resulting in extra time being added on to find a winner.
Woodstone B vs St Charles B (6-3), Whitwick St John A vs Whitwick St John B (5-1), Woodstone A vs Warren Hills (5-3) and Ellistown vs Broom Leys A (5-5 at full time, 5-7 at the end of extra time)
In the semi finals teams switched up another gear and showed real determination and passion.

The final was a very close affair until Whitwick St John were able to put a few quick try’s on the board and pull in front in the last few minutes of the game.
Whitwick St John A vs Woodstone A (8-5)
Whitwick St John will now play the winner of the rearranged Ashby tournament to see who will be crowned the winner in North West Leicestershire.
Spirit of the games went to Woodstone for never giving up, being honest and respectful and determined to keep going.
A massive thank you to Coalville RFC for allowing us to use their facilities for this event, and Castle Rock High School for providing fantastic officials for the event. Without their support, we would struggle to hold a 18 team tag rugby event.
The Ashby Tournament is due to take place on Wednesday 23rd October.
