Last week we had 35 team from 26 schools take part in our year 5/6 tag rugby hosted by Ashby RFC and Coalville RFC. Tag Rugby is sponsored by Principle Wills and Principle Financial Services, see here for more information.
The tournament is make up on teams of mixed boy’s and girl’s teams consisting of minimum of 8 players, played in pools of 4 teams with the top 2 teams from each group advancing to the quarter final stage
On Wednesday 3rd May 11 schools with 12 teams ascended on Ashby RFC to take part in a tag rugby event.
Schools involved; Willesley, Woodcote, Heather, Albert Village, Newbold, Hill Top, St Charles, New Swannington, Donisthorpe, Griffydam, Measham C of E, Oakthorpe, Snarestone, Worthington.
The pool stage featured 36 matches in across 4 pitches and were excellently officiated by young leaders from Ashby and North West Leicestershire School Sport Partnership staff.
The quarterfinal line-up featured some tight games. With Packington vs Blackfordby (7-2), Donisthorpe A vs Ashby C of E A (8-4), St Charles vs Hill Top (4-2), Belviordale vs Griffydam (8-10).
The Semi-finals were games that were all to play for, with some really tight score lines.
Hill Top vs Griffydam (11-7)
Donisthorpe A vs Packington (8-7)
The final between Donisthrope A and Hill Top was a very tight game with the game ending is a 9 all draw. After extra time was added the game nearly entered into golden time when Donsithrope managed to score the final try of the day making the final score 13-12.
A massive thank you to Ashby RFC for allowing us to use their facilities for this event, Ashby School for providing fantastic officials for the event. Without their support, we would struggle to hold a 12 team tag rugby event.
Spirit of the Games were awarded to Sir John Moore for their teams, passion, respect, honesty and determination throughout all the event. Sprit of the Games were awarded through the leaders and referees who spoke very highly of both teams.
On Thursday 2nd May, 8 schools with 14 teams ascended on Coalville RFC to take part in a tag rugby event.
Schools involved; Woodstone, Broom Leys, Dovebank, Thringstone, Whitwick St John, All Saints, Willesley, New Swaningon
The pool stage featured 28 matches in across 4 pitches and were excellently officiated by young leaders from King Edward VII Science & Sports College.
Before the tournament had even started the weather has turned and the rain was pouring. After 4 fixtures the rain had forced NWLSSP to pause the event.
All the fixtures were due to resumed as soon as the tournament was rearranged.
On Thursday 16th May, 2 weeks after the paused tournament the Coalville tournament restarted at Broomleys Primary School. With the sun shining we knew there was no chance of rain running play today.
With all but one school re-joining us we set off to finish the second half of the tournament.
After the pool stages we had the following teams going through
Willesley A, Woodstone A, Whitiwck St John A, Willesley B, Brom Leys B, Willesley C, New Swannington, Whitwick St John B.
The quarterfinal line-up featured some tight games. With Willsley B vs Willsley C (5-0), Whitwick St John B vs Woodstone A (3-12), Broomleys B vs Whitwick St John A (5-11) and finally Willesley A vs New Swannington (10-1)
The Semi-finals were games that were all to play for.
Whitwick St John A vs Woodstone A (7-5).
Willesley B vs Willesley A (2-6).
The final between Whitwick St John A and Willesley A was a very tight game, with the half time score sitting at 6-5 to Willesley A. The second half was a Willesley dominance from the start with Willesley managing to score straight from the starting whistle and keeping that momention going forward. The final score was 10 – 8 to Willesley A.
Spirit of the Games were awarded to Thringstone for their teams, passion, respect, honesty and determination throughout all the event. Sprit of the Games were awarded through the leaders and referees who spoke very highly the team.
On Friday 17th May at Ashby RFC the Grand Final was held which saw Donisthorpe and Willesley battle it out for North West Leicestershire champion and a position at the Level 3 competition the following week.
After a very close game both teams ended us drawing at the final whistle. This resulted in the game going to extra time. In the extra time Willesley managed to take advantage of a few Donisthorpe mistakes and secure the win in the last minute of extra time.
