LATEST NEWS
The 2018/19 year 5/6 basketball competitions ran over the course of 4 evenings last week, with a total of 21 schools, 31 teams and 216 children taking part. The standard again this year was very high, it was clear to see all the hard work and dedication that schools had put in prior to the event in preparing the teams.
Thank you to Castle Rock, Newbridge and Ibstock CC for their continued support in hosting events like these.
Monday 21st January 2019
Monday night saw 9 teams (see below) attend the event hosted at Newbridge. After a close group stage the teams that advanced to the semi-finals were New Swannington, Ashby C of E A&B and Whitwick St Johns. After a close, tense semi-final round the final saw Whitwick St Johns defeat Ashby C of E B by a single point to book their place in this week grand finale at Castle Rock.

Tuesday 22nd January 2019
On a very cold evening 5 schools descended upon Castle Rock High School to compete for the second spot in the grand finale. The semi-final line up saw an all Willesley Semi-final 1 and a Thringstone/Heather semi-final 2. With Willesley A and Thringstone both winning their respective SF the final line up was set and after a very tight defensive game Willesley came out narrow winners to progress to the grand finale.

Wednesday’s event, this time at Ibstock CC, started just where the previous night had left off with some every close, defensive basketball being played to complement the high scoring teams of Woodstone and Hugglescote. The semi-final line up was decided after a series of tiebreaker rules had to be used to separate some of the teams. Hugglescote, Dovebank, Ellistown and Woodstone played out the semi’s with Woodstone A defeating Ellistown 6-4 and Dovebank defeating Hugglescote 6-3. Congratulations to Woodstone who defeated a battling Dovebank team to secure their place in the grand finale.

Thursday 24th January 2019
With one space left at the grand final up for grabs the travelling basketball roadshow returned to Castle Rock High School. With a slightly different format in play, the teams were split into 2 groups after the initial phase to decide the winners, Both groups had close matches, high scoring and buzzer beating shots. When the dust had settled Snarestone had won pool 2 and Ashby Hill Top claimed the last grand final place by topping group one.
