The last week in November, also known as ‘Dodgeball Week’, saw 39 teams from 25 primary schools compete over 4 events for the opportunity to try a new sport, have fun with friends and advance to the North West Leicestershire School Sports Partnership (NWLSSP) final.
With the first 3 competitions being filled to the brim with teams eager to play, a 4th was organised to allow the remaining 6 teams to enter. The first of these events took place at Ashby School with teams from Donisthorpe, Ibstock Jr, Snarestone, Swannington and Worthington primary schools taking part. After the dust had settled, Swannington emerged victorious defeating Donisthorpe A by a difference of only +3 person difference.
Tuesday 27th saw another NWLSSP first with 2 events running at the same time in different locations, one at Ashby School and one at King Edward VII. The pouring rain outside did little to dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of the 23 schools that made their way to their respective Coalville and Ashby events. Once everyone was ready, some wetter than others, the group games started. Over the next fun packed, chaotic hour 108 dodgeball games took place thanks to the organisation of the teachers and with the support from the fantastic leaders from both Ashby and King Edward.

Knock out rounds
Ashby
Moving into the later stages of the event, teams from Ashby Hill Top x 2, Woodcote, Ashby C of E, Packington, Willesley and Belvoirdale x 2 were left in contention. Following more very competitive games, Ashby Hill Top 1 & 2, Packington and Woodcote 1 made up the line up for what promised to be an exciting final 4 round. A strong Ashby Hill Top Team 2 battled past Woodcote while on the next court a classic was in full flow. After 3 games the teams couldn’t be separated with both having won 1, drawn 1 and lost 1 and still tied on point’s difference. The game headed into a deciding game and true to form it remained close with Packington booking their place in the final.
In the final Packington got off to a strong start in the first round and went on to claim the round despite the efforts of Hill Top. The opening exchanges of the second round were closer but as the balls continued to fly across the hall they started to bounce Packington’s way and they claimed victory in the second meaning that they had booked their place in the NWLSSP Grand Final.
King Edward
With the groups feeding straight to the semi-finals, Warren Hills, Griffydam and Broom Leys won their groups with Whitwick St Johns progressing as the best runner up.
Whitwick St Johns defeated a strong Warren Hills team by 2 games to 1 while on court 2 Griffydam recorded an impressive 3 games to 0 win over Broom leys.
The final didn’t disappoint with all 3 games being extremely close and competitive, Whitwick St John’s managed to edge the first game and then also the second before a battling Griffydam team convincingly won the 3rd game.
Ibstock
The last dodgeball event of the week was hosted at Ibstock CC, with 10 teams from Dovebank, Ellistown, Hugglescote, Ibstock Jr, New Swannington, Sir John Moore and Woodstone competing for the last spot in the NWLSSP Grand Final.
Follow a hotly contest group stage that yet again came down to the tie breaker of games won to confirm the line-up for the semi-finals. Group winners of Hugglescote, Dovebank, Ibstock Jr qualified automatically with the best runner up spot going to Woodstone.
Again the semi-finals proved to be close games with Hugglescote battling past a determined Ibstock Jr team while on court 2 Woodstone managed to defeat Dovebank by 2 games to 1.
Having already encountered each other twice in the group stage, with the honours being split with one victory each, no one in attendance could predict which way the final would pan out. After Hugglescote won the opening exchanges Woodstone fought back into the match to win the first round. The second started at 100mph with both teams managing to keep 6 players on court before the match moved in Woodstones favour. Woodstone eventually claimed the second game and with it the last spot in the NWLSSP Grand Final.

Congratulations to Whitwick St Johns, Snarestone, Woodcote and Hugglescote for winning the Spirit of the Games Awards for the Dodgeball. We are pleased to say that the teachers played a pivotal role in deciding the destination of these awards.
Development Festival
For the second year running NWLSSP ran a Development Dodgeball Festival at Ibstock Community College for pupils who haven’t represented the school in another sport, wanted to have fun and wanted to try a new sport.
Unlike traditional competitions, teams consisted of members from different schools and with a neutral manager from one of the attending schools. The aim of this event wasn’t to win but to have as much fun as possible, meet new people and try a new sport. 81 children from Willesley, Broom Leys, Ellistown, New Swannington, Packington, Thringstone, Whitwick St Johns, Woodcote, Heather and Dovebank primary schools played competitive games against each other.
Everyone in attendance would agree that the children, teachers and sports leaders made this event the success it was.
Well done to all teams that took part, we hope that everyone enjoyed the events and we hope to see you all at the Basketball and Boccia in the New Year.
