On Tuesday 9th October, Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club played host to this year’s year 5/6 girl’s football competition. With 14 teams taking part, there was plenty of action across all 4 pitches as bright sunshine helped create a fantastic atmosphere.
In pool 1, Griffydam, Sir John Moore, Woodstone, Willesley and Whitwick St John A battled it out for a place in the quarter-finals. Whitwick St John dominated the group, taking 4 wins without conceding a goal. Willesley finished as runners-up with Woodstone finishing in third waiting to see if they would be one of the 2 best placed third-placed teams who would progress to the quarter-finals.
Ashby C of E, Thringstone, Whitwick St John B, Hugglescote and Broom Leys were all in pool 2. Broom Leys scored 16 goals in their 4 matches to take top spot but behind that the group was close. Thringstone were the only team to score against Broom leys in the pool and although they secured 2 draws in their other matches it was only enough for fourth place. Hugglescote and Whitwick St John B both recorded 2 wins but Hugglescote’s draw with Thringstone saw them secure second place in the group.
The final pool was another close one as Ellistown, Woodcote, New Swannington and Ashby Hill Top all took part. Hill Top and New Swannington both won 2 matches but their draw against Woodcote gave Ashby Hill Top first place. Woodcote also secured a win, leaving them in third place.
Woodstone were unlucky to miss out on the quarter-finals as Whitwick St John B and Woodcote progressed as the best placed third-placed teams.
Whitwick St John A beat Woodcote 5-0 in the first quarter-final to set up a meeting with Willesley who beat New Swannington 1-0 in their match. Hugglescote won 4-1 against Ashby Hill Top who went on to meet Broom Leys who narrowly defeated Whitwick St John B 1-0.
The top 2 teams from the pool stages were also in strong form in the semi-finals as Whitwick St John A again won 5-0 as they beat Willesley whilst Broom Leys won 2-0 against Hugglescote.
The final was always likely to be a close game with the teams having scored an average of over 3 goals per game and conceding only 1 goal between them. Broom Leys took an early 1-0 lead but after Whitwick St John A equalised in the second half the game went to extra-time. A late penalty for Broom Leys was enough to secure the 2-1 win and claim the title from Whitwick St John who won both the local and county competitions last year.
The spirit of the games award was a difficult decision as there were so many teams who could have won it. In the end, Ashby C of E won the award due to the exceptional teamwork and self-belief they showed throughout the competition.
The event would not have been possible without the support of Ivanhoe Football Club who once again provided fantastic facilities for the competition and Ivanhoe College who provided excellent young leaders who officiated the matches. The positive atmosphere across the event was also helped by the attitude and behaviour of the staff and spectators who attended – a big thank you to everyone who was there who made it such an enjoyable evening.
