Pupils from 13 schools across the area converged on Ashby Castle Lawn Tennis Club for our Year 3/4 tennis competition. Children experienced single matches, small games to improve tennis related skills, doubles matches and expert advice from the clubs tennis coaches.
The morning competition resulted in a final game between Griffydam and Ellistown with Griffydam narrowly winning 3 games to 1, but with two of the games being won by only a point it was incredibly close! Meaning that Griffydam go through to contest our final. Well done to Holy Cross for winning the Spirit of the Games award for the morning competition for the determination and passion they displayed throughout all of the activities.
The afternoon competition saw 7 schools ready to play tennis. With Packington A making it to the final narrowly ahead of Willesley A, they were matched up against Hill Top A and the final couldn’t have been closer. With the final finishing with both schools on two wins, counting back was needed to give a total point score, with Hill Top just edging past Packington by one point.
Two weeks later it was the Year 5/6 pupils turn, children were competing in single matches in this event on a slightly smaller pitch than full size. In the morning competition Packington came out on top of a 4 team round robin competition and will meet Willesley A who won the afternoon competition after defeating Willesley C in the afternoon final.
Congratulations to New Swannington who were our mornings competition spirit of the games winner for the honesty and passion they showed and Sir John Moore who were our afternoon sessions spirit of the games winner for the teamwork and honesty they showed throughout, you will be receiving your certificates soon.
A big thank you to Alex and Ashby Castle Lawn Tennis Club for hosting and organising the event it was great for the children to be able to experience tennis in a tennis club environment.
